Common Causes of Brake Sticking
Brake sticking can compromise your safety on the road and hence you need to have the problem fixed soonest possible.
1. Stuck Brake Calipers
Most vehicles’ front and back wheels are fitted with disc brakes. Disc brakes comprise various components including; brake pads, rotors, and calipers. Brake pads are housed in the calipers and they also help press the pads against the rotors to create the friction necessary for braking and slowing down.
At times the caliper can get stuck. This will cause your brakes to stick and your vehicle will pull to one side as you drive or a brake. You can take your vehicle to AAMCO Boise & Nampa for an examination. This will determine the cause of the sticking such as rust or debris. You may need to get new calipers.
2. Worn Out Brake Hose
If you’re experiencing brake sticking but your calipers are okay, your brake hose may be worn out. In case this happens fluid only flows one way, it may travel via the hose to the pistons and engage the brake pads, but may not be able to flow back to the master cylinder.
This can cause the caliper to stick. If this is the case our experts at AAMCO Boise & Nampa will examine your brake system including the hose. They will sort out the problem and replace the hose if necessary.
3. Master Cylinder Failure
When you step on the brakes, the master cylinder transforms this pressure into hydraulic pressure, hence pushing brake fluid through the system, which eventually reaches the brake caliper. Your brakes can stick or stay locked even after you release the brake pedal. If this is the case our technicians at Boise & Nampa will determine if there’s a leak in your master cylinder.
If there is a failure in the master cylinder system, your brake pedal will feel mushy or spongy. It may also push down all the way to the floor which is a sign of a failed master cylinder. If you can see brake fluid leaking at the rear of the cylinder the internal seals may be worn. Once a new one is installed your entire brake system will need a bleed and a change of brake fluid.
